Hatsgiving

In 2012 Jeremy Wernick, a 4th grader, shaved his head for the second time to raise money for childhood cancer research. It really got him thinking about kids who lose their hair during cancer treatments. So he created Hatsgiving. The first official collection was held in 2013. Each year, Hatsgiving continues to grow thanks to all of the wonderful, warm hats that are so graciously donated.

All of the hats collected are sent to pediatric cancer treatment centers. Since 2013, Hatsgiving has distributed hats to 47 treatment centers in 38 states plus Washington DC. Our hats will go to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Any remaining will be sent to treatment centers across the country that need them most.

In 2019, FM106.1 had a goal of 106 hats and collected over 800!

21 Ways to Make the Most of A Quarantine

If your employer has allowed you to work from home or you are self-quarantining due to all the craziness right now, it would be easy to plop down in front of the TV and binge watch every show your friends have been posting about for a last 3 years. There’s nothing wrong with that. We all live hectic lives, and relaxing in your favorite chair with a tasty snack would be perfectly acceptable. Or, we could make the most of this time, doing things we’ve been putting off, or taking this opportunity to learn something new.

Here are some productive suggestions:

  1. Get your taxes done. They have to get done anyway, so why not now?
  2. Clean out. Room by room, closet by closet, drawer by drawer.  Don’t forget the basement, garage, or any storage unit. Organizational expert Marie Kondo says to ask yourself, “Does what you’re holding spark Joy”. If not, give it someone who might enjoy it, throw it out if it’s broken and can’t be fixed, or donate it. Start small, even with just one drawer. You’ll feel lighter, I promise. Find your closest Goodwill for any donations you have.
  3. Stay cultured. I didn’t even know this existed, but how cool is this! The Metropolitan Opera is streaming previously recorded operas nightly. What a great way to experience the opera if you never have (for free!) or enjoy it because of social-distancing.  Ditto for the Seattle Symphony. Keep checking back as more performances are supposed to be added.
  4. What? A VIRTUAL museum? My mind is blown. Take a tour of The Louvre, The National Museum Art, The Google Art Project and more.
  5. Start an indoor garden. Fun to do initially, and then you get to watch it grow and enjoy the fruits of your labor (no pun intended).
  6. I don’t know about you, but I have 2 plastic bins under my guest bed of physical photos dating back to college. What better time to go through them, have a laugh (all that big hair!), and create additional storage space by digitizing them.
  7. Try a new Recipe from Pinterest. Maybe you recently bought an air fryer. Personally, I’m a crockpot girl. This is a great way to fill my freezer now, so I won’t need to cook in the summer.
  8. Read. I have a stack of books that I was planning on reading on planes in the coming weeks. Since everything is cancelled, I still plan on reading them. I use the goodreads app. It lets me keep track of books I’ve read, books I want to read, read reviews of books my friends have read, and there’s even a reading challenge. My goal this year is 30 books. Up from 24 last year. Wish me luck.
  9. Learn a new language with the Duolingo app. I took Italian in college, and a couple years ago revisited it with Duolingo. It worked great! But since I don’t use it regularly, it’s all escaped me. Time to get back at it. There are 20 languages to choose from.
  10. If you’re going to watch TV, try something new. Maybe The History Channel, The Smithsonian Channel or personally, I like Animal Planet. “The Aquarium” is a behind the scenes look at the Georgia Aquarium. How can watching otters and penguins not make you smile. And don’t we all need that about now?
  11. Make use of your Amazon Prime membership by using amazon prime video. I have prime and honestly have never used the video portion. Shame on me for not taking advantage of something I’m already paying for. Don’t forget Netflix, Hulu, YouTubeTV, Disney + and all the other streaming services.
  12. Get creative! I like to hand make cards when I have the chance. I also have a 7’ white birch tree I use as a 3rd Christmas tree. (Yes, I have my “regular” tree in my living room, a tree at work, and this birch in my bedroom). A couple years ago during the Polar Vortex, I made Valentine ornaments for it. I just ordered some St. Patrick’s supplies from Michaels to make ornaments for it for next year. Goofy, maybe, but I love a good glue stick and printed papers.
  13. If you’ve ever wanted to write a book, poetry or start journaling, if not now, when? Find a cute journal that fits your personality on Etsy.
  14. Feeling a little stressed? Meditation and yoga can help with just an app on your phone.
  15. Coloring also reduces street. I do have a couple coloring books for when friends’ kids visit. Not that I’m opposed to coloring Elmo or Elsa, but I think I’ll be diving into an Indiana University one that was a Christmas gift.
  16. The Alzheimer’s Association says doing a jigsaw puzzle help your brain and is fun for the entire family.
  17. Learn to knit or another hobby you’ve been thinking about starting.
  18. Pamper yourself with an at home facial  and pedicure
  19. Since we’ve all amped up on the hand washing, here are ways to relieve those cracked, dry hands
  20. Get outside! Fresh air and sunshine does the body and soul good. Just keep your distance from your neighbors.
  21. Last but not least, find a new favorite podcast on the iHeartRadio app. Ron Burgundy or Joe Rogan if you need a laugh, Business Wars, Math & Magic, WisconSINS, Crime Junkie, and thousands more!

Let’s use this time wisely to try something new. I’d love to hear how you’re keeping yourself busy.

How a tuna salad sandwich changed my life

Over a decade ago my dream job was eliminated and chances were good that I’d have to uproot my rock star life and leave Chicago. I wasn’t happy about it. Actually, I was angry. Angry that I’d have to leave my high rise apartment with a pool in downtown Chicago, my favorite bar where everybody knew my name, my friends, my all access to any concert I wanted to attend. Not only was I incredibly angry, but unbelievably sad. Terrified. I felt alone. Lost. I had no idea how I’d pay my bills, what I would do next or where I’d be doing it. With all of that weighing on me, even the tiniest thing could upset me. Clogged toilet? Devastating. Hang nail? Crushing.

Since I was unemployed, watching The Oprah Winfrey Show was part of my new daily routine. I don’t recall the context or show topic but Oprah started talking about a gratitude journal. Every night she wrote in her journal what she was grateful for that day. I thought I’d give it a try. That night I opened up an old notebook and sat quietly at my dining room table and began to write. I wrote ‘my parents’ on the first line. I paused. I wrote ‘my friends’ on line two. I stopped. I began tapping the pen on the table, then on my head, racking my brain for something else to write. Time ticked by but nothing was coming to me. I closed the notebook.

The next day I went about my day as normal… working out, job hunting, watching TRL on MTV. At the end of the day, I opened up the notebook. I wrote ‘my parents’ on the first line. I paused. I wrote ‘my friends’ on line two. I paused again. Nothing else came to me. Days went by and I kept at it. “Well she’s Oprah, everything is easy for her”, I thought. Every night I’d bring out the notebook and start to write. ‘My parents’ was on the first line. ‘My friends’ was on second line. I started a new page in the notebook thinking that a new page would bring me fresh perspective. The next day I tried using a colored pen. The day after that I didn’t sit at the dining room table, I moved to the couch. Days passed. Two lines were all I could fill.

I little over two weeks went by and I was about to give up on this stupid idea. I opened up the notebook. I wrote ‘my parents’ on the first line. I wrote ‘my friends’ on line two. I paused. I thought long. I thought hard. In the last 24 hours I couldn’t think of even one more thing I was grateful for. I sat back in my chair. I looked around the apartment. And then very slowly and proudly I wrote, ‘my tuna salad sandwich was really good today’. A tiny tear rolled down my cheek. There is was. A life-changing epiphany.

The following day, as I often did, I walked to the Lincoln Park Zoo. The sun was shining. There was briskness in the air. The city was bustling. I made my usual trek around the grounds, walked home, had lunch, and continued with the usual. Later, I opened up the notebook. I wrote ‘my parents’ on the first line. I wrote ‘my friends’ on line two. I glanced at my previous list and saw ‘my tuna salad sandwich was really good today’ and smirked a little. I went back to my current list and wrote ‘the sun was out today’, ‘the tiger was in full view today’ (this was rare, he typically hid in his enclosure), ‘I didn’t get hit by a car walking home’, ‘I talked to my best friend’, ‘I liked TRL’s #1 song’. I couldn’t stop writing. ‘I applied for 3 jobs today’, ‘I added 5 extra pounds to my weights today at the gym’, ‘mom sent me coupons’. Line after line, I couldn’t stop. ‘There were no missing socks after doing laundry’, ‘going out with friends tonight’. I wanted to stop, thinking I should save some of these thoughts for tomorrow, but I kept writing. I thought about how I spent my day and how even what I had previously never given a second thought to, the smallest, most inconsequential occurrence or action is something to be grateful for.

As we enter 2020, I encourage you to eat a really good tuna fish salad sandwich. I could completely change your outlook on life.

Addendum: I am currently reading Oprah’s book “This I Know For Sure”. It was a Christmas gift. As this blog was about to be posted, I was reading the chapter on Gratitude. What are the odds? Oprah talks about her gratitude journal! Without giving too much away because I do highly recommend the book, she says, “Sometimes we get so focused on the difficulty of our climb that we lose sight of being grateful for simply having a mountain to climb”. She goes on, “You radiate and generate more goodness for yourself when you’re aware of all you have and not focus on your have-nots. I know for sure: If you make time for a little gratitude every day, you’ll be amazed by the results”. Oprah, I get it.
